07 Apr: Measure To Provide An Additional $15 Million In Rent Assistance To Working Families Signed By Governor

TRENTON – Senators Shirley K. Turner and Ronald L. Rice welcomed the Governor’s signature today of their legislation to appropriate an additional $15 million to bolster low-income rental assistance programs that were devastated by Bush budget cuts.

“We have been working for over a year to put into place the appropriate level of funding for the State’s low-income housing program,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “Today the Governor has joined with both houses of the Legislature in standing by our neediest working families in their efforts to afford decent housing. We are picking up the slack for where the Bush Administration has failed our families.”

24 Feb: Measure To Provide An Additional $15 Million In Rent Assistance To Working Families Gets Final Legislative Approval

TRENTON – Senators Shirley K. Turner and Ronald L. Rice hailed the final passage of their bill by the Assembly today to appropriate an additional $15 million to bolster low-income rental assistance programs that were devastated by Bush budget cuts.

“For so many New Jersey families, the first step to realizing the American dream is finding a permanent home they can afford,” Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “For many of our poor families, it is difficult to find and keep a quality job, concentrate on schoolwork and maintain their personal health without a safe and permanent home. The myriad of ways the State supports its residents are vastly more effective when the recipient has a home of their own.”

07 Feb: Rice/Turner Bill For Rental Assistance Advances In Assembly

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Ronald L. Rice and Shirley K. Turner which would provide an additional $15 million for the State’s low-income rental assistance program was approved in the Assembly Appropriations Committee today.

“Everyone wants a safe place to live, and New Jersey residents are no different,” said Senator Rice, D-Essex. “It’s the job of the Legislature to figure out ways to make that dream a reality. There are approximately 100,000 New Jersey residents on the (federal) Section 8 waiting list in the State. The rental assistance program will help grant the wish of about 2,000 families who are desperate to get decent housing.”

10 Jan: Rice Bill For Rental Assistance Advances In Assembly

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Ronald L. Rice which would provide an additional $15 million for the low-income rental assistance program was approved in the Assembly Housing and Local Government Committee today.

“It’s troubling to report that New Jersey is the third most expensive State in the nation for renters, behind California and Massachusetts,” said Senator Rice, Chairman of the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee. “What is even worse is that the minimum wage for our State is lower than that of California and Massachusetts. Working residents are unable to afford adequate housing and with legislation we can try to make the dream of affordable living a reality.”

10 Jan: Working Families To Get An Additional $15 Million In Rent Assistance

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner to help more low income families afford New Jersey’s high rent prices moved one step closer to law as it passed the Assembly Housing and Local Government Committee today.

“Recent reports have shown that New Jersey’s lowest wage earners can rarely afford even the most modest apartment for their families,” said Senator Shirley Turner, D-Mercer. “When a family has to work a collective 150 hours a week just to be able to afford the average two bedroom apartment, then there is a real and immediate need for the State to develop ways of easing the burden caused by our high cost of living. We have too many people in New Jersey without a home of their own to not take action.”
