21 Dec: Whelan Legislation To Allow Closed Landfills To Be Converted To Renewable Energy Farms Signed Into Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Jim Whelan which will permit the development of solar, photovoltaic and wind energy facilities on closed landfills or quarries was signed into law last week.

“As we head into the winter months, residents of New Jersey once again feel the strain of high energy and oil costs associated with the cold weather, reminding us that it is long past time that we explore clean, renewable energy sources as viable alternatives,” said Senator Whelan (D-Atlantic). “By opening up closed landfills for solar farms and wind energy facilities, we are positioning New Jersey as a national, if not global, leader in the expanding green economy. This law allows the development of otherwise unusable land, creating jobs and encouraging economic growth in municipalities while harnessing cleaner energy and lowering people’s utility bills and property taxes.”

28 Apr: Whelan Bill To Allow Closed Landfills To Be Converted To Renewable Energy Farms Receives Senate Approval

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Jim Whelan which would permit the development of solar, photovoltaic and wind energy facilities on closed landfills or quarries was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 33-0, conforming to the Governor’s conditional veto on the bill.

“With gas prices on track to reach $4 a gallon and other energy resources raising their rates, it’s long past time that we explore clean, renewable energy sources as a viable alternative,” said Senator Whelan, D-Atlantic. “We cannot continue on our current track of spending billions of dollars for depleted and depleting resources when we have other options on the table. By investing in the success of renewable energy farms in Southern New Jersey, we can create jobs, harness cleaner energy and lower people’s utility bills and property taxes.”

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Jim Whelan which would permit the development of solar, photovoltaic and wind energy facilities on closed landfills or quarries was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 32-1, receiving final legislative approval.

“As we saw with the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the massive BP oil spill, there’s more demand for cleaner, renewable and sustainable forms of energy than ever before,” said Senator Whelan, D-Atlantic. “By allowing closed landfills and quarries to be used as solar and wind farms, we are positioning New Jersey as a national, if not global, leader in the expanding green economy. This bill put otherwise-unusable land to good use for the community, creates jobs and encourages economic growth in municipalities which are still struggling from the effects of a global economic crisis.”

15 Jul: Whelan Bill To Allow Closed Landfills, Quarries To Be Converted To Renewable Energy Farms Advances

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Jim Whelan which would permit the development of solar, photovoltaic and wind energy facilities on closed landfills or quarries was approved by the Senate Environment and Energy Committee today by a vote of 4-0.

“With the oil spill in the gulf, more people are paying attention to cleaner, safer methods of energy production,” said Senator Whelan, D-Atlantic. “Renewable energy production is emerging as a major new industry, and New Jersey should position itself as a national leader in the field. By allowing for the development of renewable energy farms on top of closed landfills and quarries, which are otherwise not being used, we can remediate these sites and expand our capacity to produce clean, renewable power.”
