23 Nov: Vitale-Gordon Bill To Restore Income Eligibility Guidelines For State AIDS Drug Program Approved In Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph Vitale and Bob Gordon which would formally restore the income eligibility guidelines for New Jersey’s AIDS Drug Distribution Program (ADDP) to the levels they were at before Governor Christie scaled back the program in the FY 2011 State Budget was approved by the Senate yesterday by a vote of 22-12.

“In good economic times and bad, New Jersey lawmakers have a sacred responsibility to stand up for programs that make a difference in people’s lives,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “Without prescription drug assistance from the State, many people living with HIV and AIDS would be unable to afford the expensive drug cocktails needed to keep their disease in check. This funding is too important to become a victim of chronic State budget shortfalls, particularly when the funding mechanism we’ve identified through this bill is budget neutral.”

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph Vitale and Bob Gordon which would formally restore the income eligibility guidelines for New Jersey’s AIDS Drug Distribution Program (ADDP) to the levels they were at before Governor Christie scaled back the program in the FY 2011 State Budget was approved by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee today by a vote of 8-5.

“Even during difficult economic times, New Jersey lawmakers still have a responsibility to stand up for what’s important in the State Budget,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “Helping people with HIV and AIDS afford the expensive drugs needed to keep their symptoms at bay should be one of our State’s priorities, in good budget times and in bad. At a time when State residents are struggling to make ends meet, we cannot turn our backs on those folks who would have nowhere else to turn.”

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph Vitale and Bob Gordon which would formally restore the income eligibility guidelines for New Jersey’s AIDS Drug Distribution Program (ADDP) to the levels they were at before Governor Christie scaled back the program in the FY 2011 State Budget was approved by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee today by a vote of 6-3, with one abstention.

“While I recognize that New Jersey is facing a tough budget year, we have to stand up for our priorities,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “Making sure that people living with AIDS have access to affordable medications to help them cope with the effects of the disease should be a priority, particularly when we can capitalize on private drug rebates and enhanced federal assistance from the Obama administration to pay for the program. This bill ensures that folks who depend on ADDP will continue to receive our support, despite the State’s bleak budget outlook.”
