13 Jun: Madden Bill To Extend Epilepsy Task Force, Add Member From School Nurses Signed Into Law

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden (D-Gloucester/Camden) that would extend the work of the New Jersey Epilepsy Task Force for another year and add representation for school nurses was signed into law today.

“Patients living with epilepsy and other seizure disorders suffer from psychological and social stigmas that go far beyond their physical ailments. While there have been notable advancements in medical research, more needs to be done to increase public awareness about this chronic condition,” said Madden, Vice-Chairman of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. “This law will allow the task force to continue their important work in examining strategies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. With the addition of a representative from the School Nurses Association, the task force will be able to come up with recommendations that reflect the voices of many different players in the healthcare community.”

“Although epilepsy is a treatable disease, further research is needed to help fight the stigma surrounding this lifelong condition,” said Madden, Vice-Chairman of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. “In order to provide sound recommendations, the task force needs enough time to examine and evaluate strategies for improving the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of epilepsy. This legislation will play an important role in continuing the dialogue among health care professionals and educating the public about epilepsy and other seizure disorders.”

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Fred Madden (D- Camden/Gloucester) that would extend the work of the New Jersey Epilepsy Task Force for another year and add representation for school nurses was approved unanimously today by the full Senate.

“It’s important that we provide the Task Force enough time to compile the necessary information to provide recommendations on how to improve the screening, diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy,” said Senator Madden. “The recommendations of the task force will be used to educate the public and health care professionals about the symptoms and treatment of epilepsy. This is a treatable disease but knowledge is vital to prevent complications and related health problems.”
