13 Jul: Karcher Bill To Crack Down On Tax-cheating Home Builders Now Law

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Ellen Karcher which will increase penalties on home builders who misclassify construction workers in an attempt to circumvent New Jersey tax laws was signed into law by Governor Corzine today.

“Too many home contractors are relying on cheap day labor on their projects, and refusing to pay fair wages and benefits,” said Senator Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer. “At the same time, they are costing the State of New Jersey millions in lost tax revenue, which is borne on the backs of honest, taxpaying citizens. We need to increase the penalties on these deceptive business practices, and ensure that all New Jersey employees are receiving a living wage.”

18 Jun: Karcher Bill To Crack Down On Tax-Cheating Home Builders Receives Final Legislative Approval

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Ellen Karcher which would increase penalties on home builders who misclassify construction workers in an attempt to circumvent New Jersey tax laws was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 24-12, receiving final legislative approval.

“It’s become an all-too-common practice for home contractors to cheat the tax system and exploit workers to line their own pockets,” said Senator Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer. “Day laborers and other employees, classified as independent contractors, do not receive a fair living wage or benefits, and are not accounted for in their employers’ contributions to State safety nets like disability insurance. We need to crack down on those contractors who avoid paying their fair share by misclassifying their employees.”

15 Mar: Karcher Bill To Crack Down On Tax-Cheating Home Builders Approved

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Ellen Karcher which would increase penalties on home builders who misclassify construction workers in an attempt to circumvent New Jersey tax laws was approved by the Senate Labor Committee today by a vote of 4-0.

“In New Jersey, it’s an all too common practice for home building contractors to hire day laborers to cut costs on a project,” said Senator Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer. “However, these contractors are exploiting a tax loophole, by classifying their workers as independent subcontractors, paying nothing in income tax, disability insurance or unemployment. The day laborers are left without an adequate safety net, while New Jersey is cheated out of millions in income tax revenue, and it’s time we put an end to this fraudulent practice.”
