19 Aug: Girgenti Legislation Preserves City Of Paterson Historic Landmark Sites In 35th District

Assistant Majority Leader Senator John A. Girgenti (D-35) is a key sponsor of legislation which was signed into law on Monday by Governor Chris Christie that will help preserve Paterson’s historic integrity. S2898 appropriates funds from the 2007 and 2009 Historic Preservation Fund to historic preservation projects, among them three sites in the City of Paterson. The funding was approved in 2007 and 2009 through voter referendums.

TRENTON – The full Senate today approved a bill sponsored by Senate President Richard J. Codey and Senate Education Chairwoman Shirley K. Turner that is aimed at inspiring high school students to answer the call to service by establishing a new four-year pilot program requiring 20 hours of community service from students at select high schools prior to graduation.

“In the age of the Internet, kids often hide behind computers, video games and television, taking part in faceless interactions that fail to expose them to real human circumstances and needs,” said Sen. Codey (D-Essex). “By making community service part of the high school experience, we can teach students that life is much bigger than the individual and that each of us has the ability to impact others.”
