04 May: Madden’s School Bus Seat-Check Legislation Ensuring No Child Is Left Behind Becomes Law

TRENTON – Acting Governor Codey today signed into law S-328, legislation sponsored by Senators Fred Madden and Steve Sweeney, Assemblymen David Mayer, Paul Moriarty and John Burzichelli which will require school bus drivers to visually inspect their vehicles for students after completing their routes.

Their measure imposes penalties for any school bus driver who fails to ensure all children are off a bus before leaving the vehicle after completing a route.

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Fred H. Madden and Steve Sweeney which would require school bus drivers to check buses for students at the end of routes received unanimous final legislative approval today in the Senate.

“In essence, this bill would legislate responsibility to negligent bus drivers. A bill like this shouldn’t be necessary, but clearly it is,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Within the past few months, two young children who had been left on school buses were found wandering around lost, cold and alone. Negligent bus drivers must be held responsible for their actions, and that is my intent in sponsoring this bill.

“Bus drivers are charged with the responsibility of transporting our children to and from school, and we depend on the drivers to keep our children safe,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Checking for students at the end of bus routes is something that would only take drivers a few minutes, but could prevent injury and potentially save lives. It’s all about taking preventative measures to protect our kids.”

“When parents put their children on the school bus in the morning, they are entrusting drivers with their most precious possessions,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Parents deserve to know that they are leaving their children in the hands of capable adults – adults who will do everything they can to make sure that the students they transport arrive at school and back home safely.”
