14 Feb: Girgenti/Turner Bill To Educate Elementary School Students About Personal Finance Clears Senate Education Panel

TRENTON – A measure sponsored Senators John A. Girgenti and Shirley K. Turner which would establish a pilot program to provide a course in financial literacy to elementary school students was unanimously approved today by the Senate Education Committee.

“It’s a pretty well known fact that many credit card companies target young students with an influx of credit card applications as soon as they turn 18,” said Senator Girgenti, D-Passaic and Bergen. “This legislation would help teach students from an early age, the importance of saving and managing their money, while showing them the benefits of developing long-term savings goals.”

“With the economy bracing for some serious changes, it is imperative that we educate our students about how to manage their finances, and not incur unnecessary debt,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer, who Chairs the Senate Education panel. “Too often, our young people are very concerned with keeping up with the ever-changing and increasingly expensive trends, while not paying enough attention to the effect it can have on their parents’ bank accounts. Our young people must be taught how to manage their money, so that they can go on to make responsible financial choices. If it helps to make them more appreciative of the sacrifices their parents make for them, that’s a definite plus.”

12 Jul: Vitale Public Advocate Bill Signed Into Law

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Joseph F. Vitale which will reinstate the Public Advocate as a watchdog agency to protect the interests of everyday New Jerseyans was signed into law today by Governor Codey.

“New Jersey now has a centralized Public Advocate who will fight for the rights of New Jersey’s most vulnerable and least vocal citizens,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “The Public Advocate will demand a higher level of public service from the State, and will work to make sure New Jersey is more responsive and attentive to the needs of its residents. The Public Advocate will ensure that everyone in New Jersey, not just the politically well-connected, has the ability to be heard.”

20 Jun: Vitale Publics Advocate Bill Moves Closer To Becoming Law

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Joseph F. Vitale which would reinstate the Public Advocate as a watchdog agency to protect the interests of everyday New Jerseyans was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 25-12.

“Reinstating the public advocate is a necessary step to give a voice back to the voiceless, and ensure that State government truly represents the best wishes of the people it represents,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “Under the current system, it sometimes seems like the politically-connected or well-represented are the only ones with access enough to change the course of government, while the needs of the working poor and less advantaged go by the wayside. With a strong Public Advocate back in place to help those State residents who sometimes fall through the cracks, we can ensure that New Jersey will be responsive to the real needs of the people we serve.”

07 Feb: Vitale Public Advocate Bill Cleared By Senate Committee

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Joseph F. Vitale which would reinstate the Public Advocate as a watchdog agency to protect the interests of everyday New Jerseyans was approved by the Senate State Government Committee by a vote of 3-1, with 1 abstention.

“For nearly two decades before its dissolution, the Public Advocate stood up for the residents of New Jersey to protect the best interests of the people,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “In New Jersey today, so often it seems that, whether it’s government corruption or private fraud, those interests are going by the wayside, while corruption and abuse are becoming a much more common phenomenon. We need a strong Public Advocate to again hold government and private interests accountable to the people of this State.”
