TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Bob Smith which would require a higher recycling standard for plastic packaging sold in New Jersey to promote recycling, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease our dependence on foreign oil was approved today by the Assembly Environment and Solid Waste Committee today by a vote of 4-2, with one abstention.

“Global warming is a proven scientific phenomenon, aggravated by our increased dependence on the production of petroleum products, like plastics,” said Senator Smith, D-Middlesex and Somerset, the Chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. “Without a greater emphasis on the re-use and recycling of plastics, we will continue feeding into the global warming problem in New Jersey.”

“New Jersey’s natural resources are absolutely precious, and we must do everything in our power to promote conservation and reuse,” said Senator Smith, D-Middlesex and Somerset, the Chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. “By encouraging greater use of recycled plastics, we will save on landfill space, conserve petroleum used in the production of plastics, and cut down on the emissions associated with producing virgin plastics, or those that contain no recycled content. The measure is far reaching and will protect the environmental health of New Jersey in so many ways.”

“New Jersey is the most densely populated State in the nation, and every inch of unspoiled land is precious,” said Senator Smith, D-Middlesex, the Chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. “We cannot give up acres and acres of open space to landfills, and we need to conserve the resources we have available. By promoting recycling, we can preserve our valuable natural resources and encourage environmentally-safe practices from our business partners in the Garden State.”
