08 Apr: Vitale Bill To Allow For Increased Infection Reporting At Health Facilities Signed Into Law

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee Vice Chairman Joseph F. Vitale which will allow the State to collect more detailed information regarding infection data at hospitals and other health care facilities was signed into law today by Governor Christie.

“Infection reporting is an important tool to make sure that hospitals and other health care facilities are following best practices to keep their patients safe,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “However, a recent report by the federal government noted that state infection reporting programs that do not independently verify data are prone to mistakes. We want to make sure that we have the best data possible, to give health care consumers a clear and accurate snapshot of the safety of New Jersey’s health care system.”

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Joseph Vitale, which would amend the “Health Care Facility-Associated Infection Reporting and Prevention Act,” to allow for increased data reporting to the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), was unanimously approved today by full Senate.

“When compiling infection data from hospitals throughout New Jersey, it is imperative that the numbers be as accurate as possible,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “Through this bill we would work to improve patient safety by ensuring that DHSS is able to verify the date it receives, an in turn, deliver real and concise numbers in its reports.”

“This bill would help to improve the accuracy of the infection data submitted by hospitals across the state,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex. “When examining instances of infections, it is imperative that the numbers and statistics be as accurate as possible. By allowing DHSS to verify the data it receives, patient safety would be improved.”

26 May: Senate Health Panel To Consider Allowing Out-Of-Network Benefits For Disabled, And Expanding Health Care Facility Reporting Requirements Thursday

TRENTON – The Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee will meet tomorrow, May 27 at 9:30 AM in Committee Room 1 of the State House Annex, to consider a number of bills, including a measure to permit disabled residents to receive in-network health benefits from out-of-network providers.

Under the measure, S-358, which is sponsored by Senators Loretta Weinberg and Joseph F. Vitale, disabled patients would be permitted to pay their normal in-network co-pay for treatment and services at out-of-network facilities, and insurance carriers would reimburse the out-of-network provider at the same rate as they would in-network facilities.
