10 Dec: Turner-Sacco ‘Animal House’ Legislation Receives Final Legislative Approval

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Shirley K. Turner and Nicholas J. Sacco which would extend New Jersey’s “Animal House” law to allow municipalities to request that landlords post a bond in order to cover expenses related to the bad behavior of their tenants was approved by the Senate today by a vote of 37-1, receiving final legislative approval.

“On college campuses in the Garden State and across the nation, so many students are hitting the books and preparing for their future,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “However, even on the best-behaved campuses, there are sometimes individual students who think having a good time is more important than excelling in academics. Many of these students become nuisance renters in communities around their college, and municipal officials need tools to help mitigate their negative impact on the neighborhood.”

07 Dec: Turner ‘Animal House’ Legislation Approved In Assembly

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner which would extend New Jersey’s “Animal House” law to allow municipalities to request that landlords post a bond in order to cover expenses related to the bad behavior of their tenants was approved by the Assembly today by a vote of 47-28.

“At many institutions of higher education in New Jersey and around the country, most college students are studying hard in order to secure for themselves a promising future,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “However, some college students continue to give the entire population a bad name by engaging in the sort of bad behavior which is more in-line with raucous comedy films, rather than real life. These ‘animal house’ students damage community property, create neighborhood mischief, participate and encourage dangerous binge drinking, and divert police resources away from other emergencies, and landlords need to step up to protect their communities from the effects of such behavior.”

05 Jun: Turner Bill To Extend ‘Animal House’ Provisions Passes Senate Panel

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner that would allow all municipalities to require landlords of ‘animal houses’ to post bonds passed the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee today.

“These ‘animal houses’ are a drain on our communities and disrupt the lives of those living in the neighborhood,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “Far too often local police officers must repeatedly break up college parties at these properties and are unnecessarily pulled away from their primary job of protecting the community.”

09 Jun: Turner Measure To Allow Background Checks For Nannies Moves Forward

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner that would authorize in-home child care placement agencies to perform background checks on potential nannies was approved by the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee today.

“When parents bring other individuals into their homes to help care for their children, they have the right to know that these individuals have clean criminal records,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “Currently, we require those who work at day care centers to undergo a criminal background check. With this bill, we will allow nanny placement agencies to also require the same checks so that their clients can have the peace of mind that comes from knowing your child is in the hands of a responsible individual.”
