23 Feb: Lesniak-Van Drew Resolution Urging Congress To Repeal Ban On Sports Betting Approved In Senate

TRENTON – A resolution sponsored by Senators Raymond J. Lesniak and Jeff Van Drew which would urge Congress to lift the federal ban on sports wagering was approved by the Senate today.

“During our current national economic crisis, states need to look to all untapped revenue streams in order to balance the books and continue to provide the services that our citizens depend on,” said Senator Lesniak, D-Union. “Sports wagering could help plug some of the revenue holes the State is currently facing and provide new capital for investment in a wide variety of economic growth projects. Rather than allow this money to funnel down the drain into illegal gambling rings, the federal government should overturn the ban and allow for State regulation and oversight on sports betting.”

11 Dec: Lesniak-Van Drew Resolution Urging Congress To Repeal Ban On Sports Betting Advances In Committee

TRENTON – A resolution sponsored by Senators Raymond J. Lesniak and Jeff Van Drew which would urge Congress to lift the federal ban on sports wagering was unanimously approved by the Senate Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee today.

“At a time when New Jersey is working to overcome chronic revenue shortfalls and the effects of a national economic recession, we need to identify new revenue sources,” said Senator Lesniak, D-Union. “Increased tax revenue generated by sports wagering could be used to fund a wide variety of worthy programs which might otherwise have to be eliminated given the State’s bleak budgetary picture. Giving states the authority to conduct legal sports wagering would be a good complement to any economic stimulus packages being considered by our leaders in Washington.”

02 Feb: Lesniak Says Final Say On Sports Betting Should Go To Voters

TRENTON – With Super Bowl weekend serving as a back-drop, Senator Ray Lesniak announced today that he will be pushing efforts to allow voters to decide if they want to legalize sports betting in the State of New Jersey.

“With the biggest sporting event of the year taking place this weekend, it’s naive to think that sports betting isn’t taking place right now in the Garden State,” said Senator Lesniak, D-Union. “But because of an act of Congress, we’ve surrendered sports betting to organized crime, off-shore casinos and Las Vegas. Why should millions of dollars go to Las Vegas, off-shore casinos and the mob? I believe New Jersey voters will want a say on this.”

13 Mar: Senate Approves Madden Resoultion To Designate March As ‘Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Month’

“Proper prenatal care is essential for the health of expectant mothers and the development of their babies,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Because complications are the leading cause of infant death during the first month of life, it is imperative that we set aside time to educate expectant parents on the key steps to promoting healthy pregnancy, delivering strong babies and teaching the proper way to care for them after they are born.”

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that would designate May of 2006 as “Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Month” was unanimously approved today by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.
