28 Mar: Coalition Against Bigotry And Hate To Discuss Slurs By Nj101.5 Talk Radio

TRENTON – The “Coalition Against Bigotry and Hate on NJ101.5 Radio” will hold a news conference at NOON on Thursday, March 29th, in Room 109 of the State House to unveil an information program to condemn the ethnic slurs, anti-gay comments and religious hate broadcast daily by the station’s afternoon hosts.

Senator Raymond J. Lesniak, D-Union, will be joined at the news conference by representatives of the Catholic Conference, the Anti Defamatiion League, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Garden State Equality, the Pulaski Day Parade Committee, the Polish Legion of American Vets, the Polish American Congress and the Council of Churches.

28 Mar: Turner Clean Elections Measure Signed Into Law

TRENTON – “The 2007 New Jersey Fair and Clean Elections Pilot Project Act,” sponsored in the Senate by Senator Shirley K. Turner, was signed into law today in a ceremony in the Governor’s Office.

“Clean elections will strengthen our democracy by limiting the power of special interest money and will expand opportunities for women and minorities by breaking down the barriers created by the high cost of running for public offices,” said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. “It will make campaigns about issues and voters and not about fundraisers and donors.”

28 Mar: Rice To Introduce A Bill To Save Residents From Subprime Mortgages That Are Forcing Residents Into Foreclosure

TRENTON – Senator Ronald L. Rice today said that the number residents who are losing their homes because of higher mortgage payments has reached an epidemic proportion and he plans to introduce a measure to re-finance these subprime mortgages for borrowers who can no longer afford their rising interest rates.

“Many of my neighbors face real financial peril because of rising interest rates and changes to the housing market,” said Senator Rice, D-Essex. “More people are making late mortgage payments, missing payments altogether and going into foreclosure. People all over the State are falling victim to rising interest rates, especially in my district. New Jersey’s reliance on subprime mortgages is increasing the state’s real-estate downturn and causing an increase in mortgage delinquencies. I saw this trouble brewing years ago, and am deeply concerned that the impact will expand beyond homeowners and negatively affect even renters,” added Senator Rice. “It’s my goal to quickly introduce and get signed into law a bill to assist New Jersey families who are facing foreclosure.”

23 Mar: Preview – Senate Budget Panel To Continue Discussion On Proposed Budget Next Week

TRENTON – The Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee will continue their hearings on Governor Corzine’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2008 next Tuesday and Wednesday.

“These hearings provide us with the opportunity to sit with the public and cabinet officials to see which programs have been effective over the past year and where our funding priorities should be for the year ahead,” said Senator Bernard F. Kenny, Jr., D-Hudson and Chair of the Committee. “The discussions we have now are essential in putting together a final budget that best serves the people of New Jersey.”

23 Mar: Codey To Introduce Bill Mandating Hiv Screening For Pregnant Women And Newborns

TRENTON – In a move that could put New Jersey at the forefront in the national fight against HIV transmission to newborns, Senate President Richard J. Codey (D-Essex) today announced that he is introducing a bill in the Senate that would require all pregnant women and newborn babies to be screened for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), making New Jersey the only state to require universal statewide testing for both.

“The key in the fight against HIV and AIDS is early detection and treatment,” said Sen. Codey. “For newborns this can be a lifesaving measure. If early detection can help reduce newborn infections and improve the quality of life for newborns and women that are infected, then by all means, we should be doing it.”

21 Mar: Turner – Stop Subsidizing Firms That Take Money And Run

TRENTON – Senator Shirley K. Turner today said New Jersey should require firms who receive subsidies and tax incentives to pay back the money if they fail to uphold commitments to create jobs and remain in the State.

“We’re the stewards of taxpayers’money, so we really have to hold these companies accountable,” said Senator Turner. “I don’t blame the firms for taking advantage of the system. I don’t expect them to bite hands that keep feeding them. The problem is that when the feast is over, they leave for another state.”

20 Mar: Karcher – ‘Casinos Should Drop Union-Stalling Tactics’

FREEHOLD – Senator Ellen Karcher, D-Marlboro, the Vice Chair of the Senate Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee, issued the following statement regarding reports that Harrah’s Entertainment, which also owns Caesars Atlantic City casino, has alleged union intimidation in an effort to delay collective representation for the casino’s dealers:

“Unless Harrah’s can point to concrete evidence of intimidation in the vote for union representation at Caesars casino, they should withdraw any appeal that delays fair representation for casino employees.

19 Mar: Kenny To Retire From State Senate

TRENTON – Senate Majority Leader Bernard F. Kenny Jr. today announced his decision to retire from the Senate when his current term is finished next January.

“When I complete this term, I will have served in the Legislature for 20 years,” said the Hudson County Democrat. “It’s been an honor to serve in both the Assembly and in the Senate and to have been chosen by my colleagues as their Majority Leader. Hopefully, the people of the 33rd District have realized an improved quality to their lives during my time in the Legislature.

16 Mar: Karcher Named To Teen Driver Safety Study Commission

TRENTON – Senator Ellen Karcher, D-Monmouth and Mercer, the prime sponsor of legislation which was recently signed into law to establish the “New Jersey Teen Driver Safety Study Commission” issued the following statement upon being selected by Senate President Richard J.
