13 Mar: Vitale-Madden Bill To Give Sex Offender Info To Dyfs Approved

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senators Joseph F. Vitale and Fred H. Madden which would provide the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) access to the State’s sex offender database was unanimously approved by the Senate today.

“DYFS needs to defend our State’s kids against all threats, including those from sexual predators,” said Senator Vitale, D-Middlesex, Chair of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. “By giving DYFS agents access to the tools they need to quickly identify dangerous sex offenders early on, and remove kids from harm’s way, we will be empowering the agency to accomplish its mission.”

13 Mar: Rice / Madden Bill Creates Support Program For Wounded Officers

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senators Ronald L. Rice and Fred H. Madden, to broaden the crisis hotline program for law enforcement officers to include counseling for those who have been wounded in the line of duty, was unanimously approved by the full Senate today.

“Without question, the job of a law enforcement officer can be dangerous, and sometimes these brave men and women are injured on the job,” said Senator Rice, a former police officer in Newark. “The road to recovery can be a painful, confusing and perhaps frightening one, but it can more easily be navigated with help from their own. These law enforcement officers risked their own lives for us, and we need to see that they are taken care of and given all the help needed to fully recover.”

13 Mar: Senate Approves Madden Measure To Help Promote Heart-Health Awareness In Student Athletes

TRENTON – The Senate today unanimously approved a measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that would help to increase awareness among parents and students about sudden cardiac death and its incidence among student athletes.

“The key to helping prevent sudden cardiac death is early detection,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Parents must be aware of the risks of sudden cardiac death, and take their children for regular medical check-ups and physicals. These deaths can be prevented, but only by taking early action and the proper precautions.”

13 Mar: Senate Approves Madden Resoultion To Designate March As ‘Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Month’

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden that would designate May of 2006 as “Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Month” to highlight the importance of prenatal care to help expectant mothers carry to full term and work to reduce premature births was approved today by the full Senate.

“Proper prenatal care is essential for the health of expectant mothers and the development of their babies,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Because complications are the leading cause of infant death during the first month of life, it is imperative that we set aside time to educate expectant parents on the key steps to promoting healthy pregnancy, delivering strong babies and teaching the proper way to care for them after they are born.”

02 Mar: Madden Measure Would Increase Awareness Of Importance Of Cardiac Screening For Student Athletes

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden designed to increase awareness among parents and students about sudden cardiac death and its incidence among student athletes was unanimously approved today by the Senate Education Committee.

“This issue of juvenile heart problems in young athletes has received a great deal of attention lately – in fact, The Star-Ledger featured a story about it on the front page of today’s paper,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “We want our young athletes to have long, productive lives and by requiring schools to distribute information on the disease warning signs, and making parents aware of the importance of screenings, we would be helping to save lives and investing in the futures of our young people.”

27 Feb: Senate Passes Madden-Buono Bill To Sanction Underage Drinkers Who Drive

TRENTON – Drivers under 21 who refuse a breath test after police suspect them of drinking even a small amount of alcohol would lose their driving privileges for up to three months under a bill sponsored by Senators Fred Madden and Barbara Buono and approved today in the Senate.

“All drivers, but especially young ones, have to think before they drink because there will be consequences,” said Senator Madden, the former Superintendent of the State Police. “I’ve seen too many lives shattered by young drivers who think they can drink and then drive.”

27 Feb: Madden/Sweeney Measure To Require School Bus Drivers To Check Buses For Students After Their Routes Clears Senate

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Fred H. Madden and Steve Sweeney to require school bus drivers to visually inspect buses for students after completing each transportation route received unanimous approval today by the full Senate.

“We count on our school bus drivers to ensure the safety of our children as they are transported to and from school,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Recently, there have been instances of children being left behind on school buses. This legislation would give parents the peace of mind that an additional precaution is being taken to protect their children.”

TRENTON – A measure sponsored by Senators Fred H. Madden and Steve Sweeney that would require school bus drivers to visually inspect their buses for students after completing each transportation route was unanimously approved today by the Senate Education Committee.

“When parents put their children on the school bus in the morning, they are entrusting drivers with their most precious possessions,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “Parents deserve to know that they are leaving their children in the hands of capable adults – adults who will do everything they can to make sure that the students they transport arrive at school and back home safely.”
