01 May: Women Senators –- Use Untapped Job Training Dollars For Women’s Healthcare

TRENTON – Following the revelation that $6 million from a job training program for women and minorities will be lapsed into the General Fund in the current budget, a group of female Senators that serve on the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee said that the money would be put to better use by restoring drastic cuts to women’s healthcare programs that the Governor instituted since he took office.

“Rather than funnel unused job training dollars back into the General Budget, the unused funds should instead be invested in women’s healthcare for women who have been unable to find work in the current job market,” said Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, D-Bergen. “When Governor Christie drastically cut funding for women’s health care in the last two State budgets, he made it more difficult for women to access the tests and treatments which can save lives. If we’re now at a point where we can identify surplus funds in underutilized programs, our first priority should be restoring some of the painful cuts from budgets past.”

20 Apr: Greenstein, Deangelo And Benson’s Road Rage Legislation Becomes Law

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by the 14th District Legislative team of Senator Linda R. Greenstein, Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo and Assemblyman Dan Benson that increases penalties for those who exhibit road rage and cause serious harm to others was signed into law today by Governor Chris Christie.

“Since New Jersey motorists drive on the nation’s most congested roads, it is of the utmost importance that they act in a rational and safe manner while behind the wheel,” said Senator Greenstein (D-Plainsboro). “When someone drives aggressively and in a rage-filled way, they can cause severe harm to their passengers or people in other cars. When something like this does occur, it is imperative that drivers are held accountable. Now with the enactment of ‘Jessica Rogers’ Law’ we can ensure justice for these victims.”

17 Apr: Mayors Join Universal Chorus Urging Property Tax Relief

Trenton – Senator Linda Greenstein, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement on Tuesday in response to the shared recognition by a large consortium of New Jersey mayors of the importance of property tax relief:

“The mayors are part of a universal chorus identifying property tax relief as an urgent priority that seems to include everyone except the governor. Residents of suburban, urban and rural communities alike are shouldering the unfair burden of escalating property taxes and the governor wants to devote state funds to an income tax scheme that would provide a windfall to the wealthy but leave the middle class with meager savings. In fact, the governor’s budget policies have made the burden worse by forcing a 20 percent property tax increase statewide during his two years in office.

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Linda R. Greenstein that would increase penalties for those who engage in road rage and cause serious harm to others was unanimously approved today by the State Senate and is scheduled for a vote this afternoon in the Assembly.

“Driving with road rage can have severe and detrimental effects on the driver, on passengers and those in other cars on the road,” said Senator Greenstein (D-Middlesex, Mercer). “These aggressive drivers must be held accountable when they cause injury to others and we must ensure that they are adequately punished for the crimes they commit.”

05 Mar: Greenstein To State: Practice What You Preach

TRENTON – Senator Linda R. Greenstein, D-Middlesex/Mercer, made the following statement today regarding the state’s practice of unfairly redistributing energy tax receipts:

“Originally created to standardize the energy infrastructure tax system statewide, the state has collected the energy tax receipts since the 1980’s and then has returned them back to the municipalities in the form of state aid. The program is intended to provide increased funding to towns each year based on an inflation-adjusted formula.

17 Feb: Greenstein’s ‘Jessica Rogers’ Law’ Approved By Judiciary Panel, Advances In Senate

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Linda R. Greenstein that would increase penalties for those who engage in road rage and cause serious harm to others was unanimously approved yesterday by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“New Jersey has the most crowded roads in the nation, making it essential that drivers act in a rational and safe manner behind the wheel.” said Senator Greenstein, D-Middlesex/Mercer. “When someone causes severe harm to their passenger or a person in another car, because they were driving in an aggressive and rage-filled way, they must be held accountable. This legislation would ensure that there is adequate sentencing based on the crime and the consequences of their actions.”

10 Feb: Smith/Sweeney/Greenstein Legislation To Protect Recreational Fishing On Artificial Reefs Approved By Environment Panel

TRENTON – Legislation sponsored by Senator Bob Smith, Senate President Steve Sweeney and Senator Linda R. Greenstein which would prohibit commercial fishing on New Jersey’s artificial reefs in order to preserve the sites for recreational fishermen was approved yesterday by the Senate Environment and Energy Panel.

“Artificial reefs have helped create a place for recreational fisherman and scuba divers to enjoy their craft while visiting and enjoying New Jersey’s shore. They serve as a great attraction for tourists and help bring visitors into New Jersey who then patronize our businesses, restaurants and hotels,” said Senator Smith, D-Middlesex, Chairman of the Environment and Energy Committee. “Unfortunately commercial fishing has taken over in these areas and is causing recreational fishermen’s lines and gear to tangle and tear. By changing the law to reserve these reefs for recreational fishing, we can ensure the vitality of the Shore economy that depends on eco-tourists and recreational fisherman to survive.”

09 Feb: Gordon/Greenstein ‘Fracking’ Ban Gets Committee Ok

TRENTON – Bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senators Bob Gordon and Linda Greenstein to prohibit the practice of hydraulic fracturing – commonly called “fracking” – in New Jersey was today released from the Senate Environment and Energy Committee.

If enacted, it would represent the first complete statewide ban of fracking in the nation.

“The environmental dangers posed by fracking are real, and the risks it could pose to New Jersey residents are abundantly clear,” said Gordon (D-Bergen/Passaic). “We cannot sacrifice the water supply of countless families. We cannot allow fracking spoils to pollute our waterways. We must stand up and say some things we are simply not putting at risk.”
