Codey Statement On Passage Of Civil Unions Bill

TRENTON – Senate President Richard J. Codey (D-Essex) today released the following statement on the passage by both houses of bill S2407/A3787, which he co-sponsored with Senator Loretta Weinberg, creating civil unions for same sex couples:

“I am proud of both houses for making this bill a priority and demonstrating their overwhelming support for equality. With this approval, and the Governor’s anticipated signature, the new year is sure to be filled with many groundbreaking protections for New Jersey’s same-sex couples.

As I have said before, the history of civil rights progress – whether it’s women’s rights, minorities’ rights or any other movement – is one that is typically achieved in incremental steps. This is, by no means, the end. But it is a major step forward.”
