Gill Statement on Trump’s Supreme Court Nominee

Senator Gill

TRENTON – New Jersey Senator Nia H. Gill, vice-chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement on President Donald Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch to serve as a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court:

“This nominee’s positions do not align with that of the majority of residents of our state or country.

“Last night Donald Trump said he is a man of his word, and will do as he says. Let’s remember that during the campaign he pronounced that with his selection for the court, Roe v. Wade would be ‘automatically’ overturned. We should not take lightly his words.

“Judge Gorsuch’s Hobby Lobby ruling alone demonstrates that he will take positions that limit women’s access to contraceptives and healthcare. I am greatly concerned that as a member of the court, he would seek to repeal longstanding and established decisions that would harm millions of women and families in this country.

“We’ve already seen the dire consequences of having someone in a powerful position with extreme views. The President’s actions on immigration are among the most dangerous we’ve seen and are contrary to our values as Americans and in violation of the Constitution. We need justices who are committed to upholding the constitutional rights of people in this country.

“A nominee whose approach is to model the positions of Justice Scalia is not where we should be as a country. There is far too much at stake.”
