New Law Appropriates $45.15 Million For Farmland Preservation
MONROEVILLE – A measure sponsored by Senators Steve Sweeney and Fred H. Madden, which appropriates over $45.2 million from the Garden State Farmland Preservation Trust Fund (GSFPT) for farmland preservation, was ceremonially signed today by Governor Corzine at Schober Orchards.
“New Jersey’s farmers work hard to grow exceptional produce that is not just enjoyed here in New Jersey, but also around the world,” said Senator Sweeney, D-Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem. “This program represents an investment in development and preservation for farmland throughout the state.”
“This bill is about using available funds to help farmers continue growing the products that allow New Jersey to remain the ‘Garden State’,” said Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester. “As our communities continue to grow, it is important that we are able to preserve and expand our valuable farmland for future generations of New Jerseyans.”
The Senators’ legislation, S-2755, allows counties and municipalities throughout the state to use the funds for farmland preservation purposes.
The GSFPT has been the funding source for New Jersey’s farmland preservation projects since 1999. The program is administered by the State Agriculture Development Committee, in the State Department of Agriculture, said Senators Sweeney and Madden.
“New Jersey is home to a rich farming heritage, and this funding will allow local farmers to continue that way of life for years to come,” said Senator Sweeney.
“As a resident of South Jersey, I understand how important farming is to the local and State economy. By appropriating these funds, we’re helping the State’s farms to continue to supply consumers with the best possible produce,” said Senator Madden.
This bill received final legislative approval on June 21.
