Turner Calls Allegations Of Steroid Abuse & Misuse Of Taxpayer Dollers Unacceptable

Senator Shirley K. Turner (D-Mercer)

Will Work To Prevent Future Abuses From Occurring

TRENTON – Senator Shirley Turner (D-Mercer) issued the following statement today regarding allegations of steroid abuse among New Jersey’s law enforcement and firefighting agencies, as reported in the Star Ledger over the past several days:

“The allegations regarding steroid use and abuse of taxpayer dollars are deeply disturbing and demand immediate attention.

“While most New Jerseyans are struggling to meet mortgage payments and provide even the most basic needs for their families, there were law enforcement officers purchasing steroids on the taxpayer’s dime. The behavior of these individuals is especially disturbing in light of the number of their fellow officers that are currently being laid off across New Jersey.

“While the economic consequences of their actions are deplorable, the very fact that these individuals were using steroids is simply unacceptable. Given all we know about the impact steroids have on the body and on the mind, it is inexcusable that these people would use them. Those in charge of ensuring our safety should not be under the influence of any substance that causes irrational and erratic behavior.

“I will be working with my colleagues in the Legislature over the coming days, weeks and months to take the appropriate steps necessary to ensure these kinds of abuses and misuse of taxpayer dollars do not occur again.”
