TRENTON – Senate President Pro Tempore Shirley K. Turner, D-Mercer, made the following statement today on the news that Coretta Scott King had passed away:
“Coretta Scott King was an inspiration to everyone who valued equality, opportunity and justice in the United States.
“She was an active partner in her husband’s fight to realize the promise of our founding fathers and provide all Americans with civil rights, regardless of the color of their skin, the faith they believed in or the size of their bank account.
“After the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we would have all understood if she had stepped away from the public eye. Instead she took up the mantle of her husband and made sure his dream for America remained alive even after such a horrific tragedy.
“The courage and strength she showed in life should serve as an inspiration to all Americans long after this day has passed. Today the United States has lost another heroine.
“My heart goes out to her four children and the rest of her family.”
