Sacco Applauds Higher Education Plan

Says New Initiative Will Put NJ Colleges and Universities on ‘The Right Course’

TRENTON – Senator Nicholas J. Sacco, D-Hudson and Bergen, issued the following statement today in support of the announced plan by Senate President Steve Sweeney, Senator Joseph F. Vitale and Senator Donald Norcross, which would restructure higher education in the Garden State:

“I applaud the sponsors on developing a plan of action for our State’s colleges and universities which will put our institutions of higher education on the right course to keeping our best and brightest in-state, and attracting new talent from out of state.

“Every year, New Jersey faces a ‘brain drain’ as our best students attend college out of State. Our institutions of higher education are struggling to contain the soaring cost of tuition while ensuring enough funding to keep our colleges and universities competitive and meet the demands of a technologically-sophisticated student body.

“The Senate Democrats’ plan would ensure a rational reorganization of higher education in this State, so we can capitalize on the strengths of our individual universities and colleges while mitigating their weaknesses. Ultimately, it will ensure a much stronger system Statewide, in which New Jersey’s investment in higher education can be put to the best use possible.

“I look forward to working with our Senate President and others to ensure that the Senate Democrats’ plan for higher education becomes a reality.”
