Says Law Will Restore New Jersey as Life Science Global Leader, Elevate Institutions in Medical Education

TRENTON – Senator Joseph F. Vitale, D-Middlesex, today released the following statement regarding the signing of the “New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act,” which provides a collaborative framework for medical and health science education at New Jersey’s research universities:

“With the signing of the ‘New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act’ today, we are forging new working relationships between medical and health sciences programs throughout the state that will pool our intellectual resources and attract more federal funds for research in these fields. This restructuring creates a ‘perfect match’ between the medical and academic institutions in New Jersey.

“This transformative legislation will provide our universities with a competitive advantage in the medical and life science programs, attracting New Jersey’s and the nation’s best and brightest students and in turn offering the state’s biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies vast resources to continue their innovative research and development. We already have some of the best hospitals, medical schools and universities in the country and now they will be empowered to capitalize on their abilities to pursue research, to train new generations of doctors and to put New Jersey on the cutting edge of life sciences. By elevating these institutions and providing them with the resources to create world-class medical and health science programs we will restore the state as a global leader in life science research.

“This is good for education, for medical care and for economic progress.”
