Weinberg-Sweeney Resolution Denounces President’s Characterizations of Immigrants, Asylum Seekers & Members of Congress
TRENTON – A Senate committee today endorsed an official resolution condemning the comments by President Donald Trump about immigrants, asylum seekers, and some members of Congress.
Sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg and Senate President Steve Sweeney, the resolution, SR-155, approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee, condemns Trump for his hateful, racist and divisive language in tweets and statements.
“His words and behavior are divisive, disrespectful and run counter to the American principles of equality and inclusion that have shaped our country since its beginning,” said Senator Weinberg (D-Bergen). “In New Jersey, we embrace our diversity as one of our most enduring strengths and our unity as one of our most cherished attributes.”
“We will not be silent in the face of the spiteful attacks against fellow citizens and we will not be distracted from our pursuit of justice and equal treatment of all Americans,” said Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland). “His rhetoric is divisive and hateful. We are showing that his words are not acceptable in New Jersey.”
The resolution condemns President Trump for a series of tweets he issued in July in which he called for “progressive Democratic congresswomen” to “go back” to their “corrupt” and “broken and crime infested” countries. The resolution also condemns Trump’s comments disparaging immigrants and asylum seekers as “invaders.”
